Desk Report: A unique football tournament, ‘Goal for Climate’, was held in Satkhira to raise awareness about climate change. The participating teams were named Sidr, Aila, Amphan, and Typhoon—powerful cyclones that have struck southwestern Bangladesh. According to the organizers, this naming aimed to highlight the severity of the climate crisis.

On Monday, February 19, the tournament took place at the PN School ground near PTI, organized by the Youth Adaptation Forum in collaboration with the international development organization Save the Children and local NGO Uttaran.

The event was inaugurated by Tayeb Hasan Shamsuzzaman Babu, a former FIFA Elite Referee and national award winner. Distinguished guests included Md. Mahbubur Rahman, Satkhira District Sports Officer; Khandakar Arif Hasan Prince, a renowned athlete and father of Bangladesh Women’s Football Team captain Afida Khandakar Pranti; Advocate Munir Uddin, an official of Uttaran; Mohammad Ali, Uttaran’s Project Coordinator; and Abu Bakar Siddique, Project Coordinator of Save the Children.

The tournament commenced with a welcome speech by Ibrahim Khalil, General Secretary of the Youth Adaptation Forum, and was presided over by the organization’s President, Karna Biswas KD. The entire event was moderated by Md. Hossain Ali, Vice President of the forum.

To raise awareness about climate change, four teams were formed and named after cyclones that have impacted the Satkhira region—Typhoon, Sidr, Aila, and Amphan. Each team symbolized the fight against climate change.

In the final match, Amphan, led by the forum’s Vice President Md. Hossain Ali, emerged as the champion, defeating Typhoon, captained by President Karna Biswas KD.

Unlike conventional football tournaments that award trophies or medals, this event took an eco-friendly approach. Instead of medals, saplings were distributed among the players of the champion and runner-up teams for tree plantation.

During his inaugural speech, Tayeb Hasan Shamsuzzaman Babu said, “Football is not just a game; it is a powerful medium for social change. Spreading awareness about climate change through this tournament is truly commendable.”

Satkhira District Sports Officer Md. Mahbubur Rahman remarked, “If we can use sports to raise awareness about critical issues like climate change, then it becomes more than just entertainment—it fulfills a social responsibility.”

Advocate Munir Uddin, an official of Uttaran, stated, “The people of the southwestern region are victims of climate change’s devastating effects. Such initiatives by the youth are truly inspiring.”

Abu Bakar Siddique, Project Coordinator of Save the Children, emphasized, “If we want to protect future generations from climate crises, we must act now. Such youth-led initiatives can drive sustainable development in society.”

The tournament attracted a large crowd from different walks of life. A local spectator commented, “The idea of spreading climate change awareness through sports is truly unique. More such events should be organized.”

Another parent said, “My child participated in the tournament. He didn’t just play football; he also learned the importance of environmental conservation.”

The organizers believe that such initiatives play a crucial role in both symbolically and practically fighting climate change.
